EMERGENCY CARE

While orthodontic treatment is generally safe and comfortable, there may be times when an emergency occurs, such as a loose appliance or wire. Knowing how to deal with these emergencies can make the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major problem. Here at Cosse & Silmon Orthodontics, we are committed to providing our patients with the highest level of care, even in emergencies.

General soreness

It’s common to feel some soreness after getting braces, or an appliance put in. This is because your teeth are adjusting to the new pressure being applied. You can alleviate the soreness by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water or taking over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Eating soft foods and applying a cold compress to the affected area can also help.

Headgear discomfort

Headgear may initially feel uncomfortable, but it’s important to wear it as prescribed by your orthodontist. If you experience discomfort, make sure the headgear is properly adjusted and fitted. If the discomfort persists, contact our office for further instructions.

Loose appliance

If an appliance, such as a retainer or expander, becomes loose or detached, contact our office as soon as possible. Don’t try to fix the appliance yourself, as this could cause further damage or misalignment.

Loose bracket

If a bracket becomes loose or detached, try to keep it in place with your orthodontic wax and contact our office as soon as possible. Don’t try to remove the bracket yourself, as this could damage your tooth or the bracket.

Loose wire

If a wire becomes loose or detached, try to push it back into place with tweezers or a pencil eraser. If you can’t push it back into place, use wax to cover the end and contact our office for further instructions.

Poking wire

If a wire is poking the inside of your cheek or causing discomfort, use orthodontic wax to cover the end and contact our office for further instructions. Don’t try to cut the wire yourself, as this could cause further damage.

In any emergency situation, it’s important to contact our office as soon as possible. We can guide how to proceed and schedule an appointment if necessary. Remember, even minor emergencies should be addressed promptly to avoid further complications or delays in your treatment.
